The Metis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is a progressive governance entity representing over 19 000 Métis residing in Ontario. Established in 1993 through the will of the Métis people, the MNO has grown into a political organization employing over 200 staff and ensuring important resources and services are being delivered to their communities.

The MNO is currently at a momentous and unique time in history. The federal government is committed to rights recognition, relationship building, and reconciliation and MNO is positioning itself to support this important work. These factors offer MNO a prime opportunity to advance Métis rights, claims, and modern day Métis treaties with the Crown, and to build the infrastructure, governance and operational structures that will lay the foundation for a strong and robust Métis government and public service that will serve our Métis Nation and community for generations to come. An important part of this historic development work involves a certain amount of restructuring of the MNO operational model to allow the organization to better meet the increasing and evolving needs that these expanded partnerships and relationships will involve.

The Role

The newly created Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) will drive progress on the MNO’s rights agenda, contribute substantially and equally to broader strategic planning for the MNO, and enhance intergovernmental relations and partnerships.  Further, they will support the creation and integration of a Policy Unit to support the entire administration and will provide ongoing expertise to the greater MNO. The role will have a wide portfolio, including communications, research and evaluation, the MNO Registry, Métis traditional knowledge and way of life, intergovernmental relations, and lands, resources and consultations.

Accountable to the Provisional Council of the Métis Nation of Ontario (PCMNO), working collaboratively with the Chief Operating Officer, and reporting directly to the MNO President/Chief Executive Officer, the CSO will bring exceptional capacity to build and maintain effective working relationships with Métis leadership, government officials, and other stakeholders.

The successful candidate will hold a degree in law, public administration or political science and a minimum of 10 years’ experience in senior management positions dealing with Indigenous issues relating to rights, treaties, and self-government. An innovative, strong and collaborative leader, the CSO will also bring knowledge of Métis culture, traditions and way of life.  Preference will be given Métis candidates.
